Tell us about the work you do for Fine Point.
I am a Controller with Fine Point and I am responsible for managing the ongoing financial reporting operations of each outsourced startup client. This includes being a trusted advisor, reviewing monthly financial reports prepared by staff accountants, assisting with the preparation of financial projections and models, preparing useful KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), and reviewing controls to mitigate risks. I am also the primary liaison between external auditors and tax preparers.
Tell us about your educational and professional background before you arrived at FPC.
I hold a Master of Professional Accountancy degree from the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. I started my career in public accounting, where I spent 11 years working with clients and other service providers. After leaving public accounting, I worked at a local Madison, WI non-profit organization where I was integral in the creation and managing of a start-up life insurance entity with full responsibility for creating and maintaining policies and procedures, creation and functionality of the IT systems, creation and maintaining all financial accounting systems, and reporting to the CEO and board of directors.
What do you like most about working at Fine Point?
I really like that Fine Point has a variety of clients in many different industries (SaaS, non-profit, games studio, etc.) thereby allowing me to gain experience and understand the nuances in each of those industries. I also like the flexibility that Fine Point provides for its employees; it offers a results-only work environment (ROWE), an outcomes-driven management style, where the employees meet the needs of our clients by working where and when they work best.
Luella is a big reader. Any favorite business, accounting, or other books, blogs, or podcasts you like?
One of the most inspiring books I have read is “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ by Stephen R. Covey. This book emphasizes self-renewal and requires an understanding that leadership and creativity require us to attain physical and mental resources to attain our goals.
One thing others might be surprised to learn about you.
I believe I have successfully hidden that I am an avid “Trekkie.” Well, maybe I haven’t been as successful at hiding this fact as well as I thought I did ;).
When you’re not working at FPC you…..
…will find me and my family camping in our travel trailer exploring the many great state parks in Wisconsin and the surrounding midwestern states.
